We all love the taste of bacon, and now there's an easy way to baconify just about anything. Yes, friends, Bacon Salt is upon us and it's as delicious as it sounds. Bacon salt, which incidentally is zero-calorie, vegetarian, and kosher, is a magic new seasoning that adds the salty, porky taste of bacon to all your favorite foods. I recently received samples of all three varieties — hickory, peppered, and original, and have been putting them through their paces the last few days. So far I've found it to be good stuff.

I've tried it on hamburgers, spinach salad, soup, breakfast tacos, and grilled cheese sandwiches. The only thing it turns out not to be good in was coffee (not surprisingly). By far the most unexpected goodness I discovered was "bacon popcorn". Notably interesting is that the guys behind this great invention funded the company on prize money from America's Home Videos. Only in America, I'm so proud…. (sniff). Seriously, this is good stuff. I'm bringing some to the office, nothing makes leftovers and cheap microwave dinners palatable like a little bacon. You can buy some for yourself on Amazon.

Making Bacon Salt With Real Bacon

If you'd rather use real bacon instead of a vegetarian seasoning blend, homemade bacon salt is straightforward to make, though it comes with a different set of storage rules than the shelf-stable commercial product reviewed above.

Bacon-to-Salt Ratio

Cook bacon until very crispy, let it cool completely, then pulse it in a food processor or spice grinder with coarse salt at roughly a 3-strips-to-2-tablespoons ratio, adjusting to taste. Pulse in short bursts rather than running the grinder continuously so the fat doesn't turn the mixture into a paste.

Storage and Shelf Life

Because it contains real rendered fat and meat, homemade bacon salt is not shelf-stable like the commercial version. Store it in an airtight container in the refrigerator and use it within about a month for both flavor and food safety.

Cleaning Your Grinder Afterward

Since a spice or coffee grinder used for real bacon has been in contact with raw animal fat, wash it thoroughly with hot, soapy water afterward before using it for anything else, and consider keeping a grinder dedicated to savory/meat use if you make this often.

Is Bacon Salt made from real bacon?
No. Bacon Salt is vegetarian and kosher certified. It uses a proprietary blend of seasonings and natural smoke flavoring to replicate the taste of bacon without any meat products.
How many calories are in Bacon Salt?
Bacon Salt contains zero calories per serving, making it a guilt-free way to add bacon flavor to any dish.
What are the best foods to use Bacon Salt on?
Bacon Salt works well on eggs, popcorn, burgers, grilled cheese sandwiches, salads, soups, fries, baked potatoes, and mac and cheese. The original and hickory varieties are the most versatile. Avoid using it in coffee. It also works well as a rim salt for savory cocktails like a Bloody Mary -- wet the rim of the glass and dip it in Bacon Salt the same way you would with a margarita salt rim.
Which Bacon Salt flavor is the best?
The Original flavor is the most popular and versatile. Hickory adds a deeper smokehouse flavor ideal for grilled meats and BBQ dishes. Peppered adds a spicy kick that pairs well with eggs and burgers.

Bacon Salt is one of those products that sounds like a gimmick but delivers genuine value in the kitchen. Whether you are a vegetarian looking for smoky flavor, watching calories, or just want to add a hit of bacon taste to everyday meals, this zero-calorie seasoning earns its place next to the salt and pepper shakers. The three-variety pack gives you the full range of flavors to experiment with.
